As we come to the end of this year and a fresh new year begins, starting it on a clean slate is such a good feeling. It gives you the opportunity to let go of the old and start anew.
Maybe the way you’ve been living your life until now hasn’t been serving you well—it might have kept you stuck in some way.
The methods or lifestyle you’ve used so far haven’t brought you the results you desire or made you feel content and happy.
If that’s the case, then it’s time for a change. And the new year is the perfect time to make that shift! 🙂
As January starts, set new rules and methods that help you feel more connected to yourself and align with your path of growth.
Note: This is a heavy post, and it’s not something you’ll do in one day but over time, step by step. My points here might seem different, but this is how I’ve been living recently. These are things I’ve been implementing in my life, and they’ve brought me more growth than ever before.
Growth, not just in terms of results, but in overall, inside-out contentment with constant improvement. So Lets learn Ways to Start Fresh in January!
But first, Pin it for later!
35 Ways to Start Fresh In January
1. Reflect on the Past Year
Starting a new way always stems from reflecting on the old way.
Ask yourself: What didn’t work, and why?
If the way you were living didn’t serve you well, reflecting on why and what didn’t work is very important. You can’t change anything unless you become aware that change is needed.
In the life of every successful person, growth or change began with deep self-reflection and awareness of things that were blocking their growth.
There could be many things blocking your growth:
- Mindset and perspective
- Limiting beliefs
- Emotions
- Habits
- Environment
Reflect on and become aware of these mindsets and limiting beliefs that have been creating blockages in your growth and ability to achieve the life you desire.
So, how do I reflect?
Take a notebook and make sure you have some quiet alone time—either at home or in a peaceful café where no one can disturb you.
Take some deep breaths and get ready for some deep reflection, as you’re about to reflect on an entire year!
Think back on the year that passed and write a summary. Use these journal prompts to guide your reflection:
- What were your expectations when you started last January?
- What were your goals and visions for the year?
- How did you feel throughout the year?
- Were there changes, such as waves of emotions or mental health shifts? When did they occur? What happened when you felt good, and also when you felt bad?
- What obstacles did you face? Go through each one and dive deep into what happened and what you learned.
- How was your health throughout the year? How did you feel physically? What things did you realize about your body that need attention?
- What were the highlights and accomplishments, from small to big? List them all! How did they make you feel?
- Did you experience any major or small learnings throughout the year? What were they?
- What are some things you did that pushed you out of your comfort zone?
- What did you want to try but didn’t because you were overthinking or feeling scared?
- Why do you feel the need to change your life? What’s motivating you?
- How much quality alone time did you spend with yourself in the past year? What did you learn about yourself?
- What things did you try to change about yourself? How did they help?
- For the things that didn’t go well or bothered you, what actions did you take to learn from them and overcome those challenges?
- Do you feel lost or stuck? Or do you feel connected to yourself and filled with purpose?
- When you think about the future or your dream life, what excites you about it?
- What scares you about it? What’s the worst that could happen?
These journal prompts are essential for diving deep into yourself, shedding light on the changes you need to make to begin fresh.
Use them throughout the rest of the post as well, so make sure you fill them out.
You can answer these prompts in one sitting or spread them out over a few days. More prompts may come up in the points that follow.
2. Spend Enough Time Connecting with Yourself
This may seem like a repetition of the previous point, but it’s slightly different.
As you answer the prompts above, I’m sure you’ll learn more about yourself.
You’ll gain clarity about your life and feel emotionally and mentally better as you release everything.
You’ll also gain major realizations about your past.
All of this happens just by connecting with yourself!
That brings me to the point that the key to living a beautiful life is simply connecting with yourself. The more time you spend truly getting to know yourself, the better. This includes:
- Understanding your triggers from past traumas
- Recognizing your limiting beliefs stopping you from growing
- Identifying the people and environment causing disharmony in your life
- Shaping your mindset around the life and things you want
- Unlearning old thought patterns and creating space for new ones
Anything you want outside of you originates from within.
To change anything externally, you first need to understand what’s inside you that needs to go and what needs to be added.
And that can only happen when you dedicate time each day to deeply connect with yourself. This is a journey where, as you keep learning, you’ll find new things to heal and learn.
3. Get Some Vision and Set Goals for the Year
After reflecting and connecting with yourself, you should have found some clarity about your future.
New ideas may have come to you, or you may feel drawn to experiment with something new.
Before your logical mind jumps in and tries to dismiss those ideas with thoughts about what could go wrong, take a pause.
Be open to exploring the possibilities! Imagine what amazing things could happen from those ideas. Write them down in a notebook, and get clear about your vision for your life.
Be as delusional as possible—don’t let logic get in the way!
4. Make a “Dump” List of Things You Want to Do and Experience This Year
Now that you’ve written your vision and goals, make a more detailed “dump list” of everything you want to do or experience this year.
Write down even the tiniest desires, like a designer bag you want, a travel destination, a new hobby, or a career path you want to explore.
The reason behind this is to bring your desires from the mental realm into the physical world through writing.
When you write them down, they become clearer and more achievable. Writing it down increases your chances of achieving it by 50%.
5. Write Down Ways You Want to Upgrade Your Habits and Personal Growth
When you think about changing your life, you likely envision upgrading yourself as a person.
This includes lifestyle changes and habits that will help you grow and become the person you aspire to be.
For example, if you imagine yourself as a strong, lean person, what habits do they have? What do they eat and drink? How do they think about their body?
Start becoming that person now by adopting the habits your future self would have. This will bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.
So think about who you want to be in future? What kind of lifestyle habits that future version has that helps them be who they are
and write them down and start becoming that today!
6. What are 1-2 things you want to do out of your comfort zone
Thomas Jefferson said, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done.”
You can’t expect to get something new by doing the same thing.
To achieve unfamiliar things, you have to do unfamiliar things. This is what stepping out of your comfort zone is all about!
Now, think about 1-2 things you can do to step outside your comfort zone.
It might require a lot of courage, so start small and witness the magic that happens when you take the leap.
7. Set a Priority List
We all have countless desires and goals, but instead of trying to focus on all of them at once, it’s important to prioritize.
What is your main priority right now? It could be your health, career, relationships, mental well-being, or feeling content. Whatever it is, start with your #1 priority and work your way down.
Focus on your top priority and let the rest fall into place.
8. Do Mindset Framing
One of the biggest challenges when pursuing any goal is mindset. You may struggle with consistency, action, or seeing results. But none of this is due to your circumstances—it’s your mindset.
I used to blame external circumstances, saying, “I want to do this, but that’s not letting me.” However, when I started working on my mindset and overcoming my limiting beliefs, I saw a massive shift.
All the excuses that seemed valid were just resistance created by me.
To go deeper into this topic, I’ll be writing a separate blog post soon, so stay tuned!
For now, understand that everything you want is possible, and all the reasons for not achieving your goals are limiting beliefs you need to work on.
9. Focus on Your Eating Habits
This is a bit of a different tip from where I’m going with these points, I know!
But I really want to shed light on eating habits! Today, many of us are eating junk food and processed foods that contain all sorts of things.
These are not real foods.
Even if your focus is not on changing anything about your diet this year in your New Year goals, I would suggest you give a little attention to eating real foods—foods that fuel your body.
Eating whole foods actually helps with everything you need: your mental health, physical health (of course).
The energy you need both mentally and physically to go after your dreams comes from the nutrition you give your body.
Try to slowly shift your eating habits and incorporate real foods that provide nourishment, joy, and energy to create your dream life!
10. Find Ways to Incorporate Self-Care in Your Daily Life
Now, this is very important to add into your daily life, no matter what your goal is.
Back 1–2 years ago, I used to be a hustling productivity girl who thought I needed to hustle, be on top of my schedule, and get so much done to achieve my dream life.
Things like self-care, hobbies, and having fun felt like guilt and a waste of time coming between my goals.
But that was not true; in fact, it was the opposite.
Of course, I was left with burnout, and the passion and excitement I had for my desires were gone because of how mentally and physically I had pushed myself.
Going after our desires should be a fun and exciting process, not exhausting and dreaded.
Now I focus on practicing self-care, having fun in between, and truly enjoying my life. Taking that time out for myself helps me feel connected and recharged.
It makes me more productive, and when I start doing my tasks, I have so much energy and focus.
I get more done, in fact, now!
So, find ways to incorporate rest and self-care into your life and make time for rest and fun!
11. Take Aligned Actions
Aligned actions are different from your usual actions.
Let me explain.
Normally, we all take steps to get what we want, right?
We take this step, then do this or that, and so on. But in reality, there are hundreds of ways to get your desired reality, not just one plan you’ve decided.
So, what happens is you create an action plan limited to your experience and mindset, get attached to that plan, and think it’s the only way to achieve your results.
As you start taking those action steps, you may encounter obstacles and restrictions. This can make you lose trust in your ability to succeed and feel low and frustrated.
You might think, “It may not happen if it’s not happening this way.” But there are endless possibilities we aren’t aware of.
The thing is, when you set an intention and desire, your job is to focus on being in that desired state.
The how and when are not for you to worry about! The path will open up one step at a time; you just need to flow with it.
Let me explain: what I’m trying to say is that instead of being rigid about your plan, be open to all possibilities.
Take one step that feels right to you now—don’t think of all the hundreds of steps at once.
Think about what is in your control right now to get you closer to your dream self!
As you start taking aligned actions, the actions will feel connected to your purpose and will feel right in the moment.
More pathways will open up over time, even if they are not part of the action plan you set.
So when you take action and face an obstacle, instead of feeling discouraged, stay open and free.
Let the next step come to you naturally and act upon it. This is what aligned actions are!
12. Implement Flow Living
Quite similar to what I explained above, flow living is all about that.
It’s a new way of living that I’ve been implementing in my life—living with flow.
Every desire I have, I act on it with excitement, taking it as a fun challenge.
Every day when I wake up, I feel a sense of excitement: “Let’s see what happens today when I do this. How will I feel after doing it?”
And as I keep going with the flow, doing things in connection with my intuition and being detached from my PLAN, I am able to live with so much joy and no rush.
I know everything I want to have and become, I will—and I am already there.
I don’t have to force my plan or be desperate to get it now. In fact, I want to enjoy the process of getting there and see how beautifully it unfolds.
With this new way of living with flow, I’ve been able to let go of worry, fear, and desperation about my goals.
I am happier, and I get things done with more ease. Before, I would worry and force things, and end up feeling frustrated.
Now, I’ve delayed instant gratification and started living with flow, which is my next point!
13. Detach Yourself from the Outcome from the Very Beginning
You must have heard growing up that the more you chase after something, the more it runs away.
The more you put something on a pedestal, the more it controls your life—mentally, physically, and everything else.
This is what happens with our desires too. You have desires, and you’re attached to them now.
You’ve made them so big that you put them on a pedestal, thinking that without these desires, your life will be incomplete.
And that’s exactly what’s happening. The desire controls your mental health, physical health, and daily lifestyle.
You don’t feel good or enjoy your life because you think, “Once I have it, I’ll be complete and happy.” And that’s a myth.
The gratification of getting that will last only 30 seconds at most. After that, you’ll be chasing your next desire.
So why be so attached to it? Why not detach from the desire and think of it as something extra nice to have?
How about you make ways to feel complete and happy without it, so whether you get it or not, you still feel happy and whole?
The faster you detach from the desire, plan, and let go, the faster you’ll get everything!
When I say “detach,” I don’t mean giving up on your desire or not doing anything.
I mean that as you keep taking aligned actions toward your goals, emotionally detach from the outcome.
Think of it as a fun game where whatever the result is doesn’t matter because you’re here to enjoy the game and have fun!
14. Find Tools to Learn More About Areas You Want to Grow In
To upgrade yourself to the version you want to be, there are so many tools available nowadays.
There are so many books, mentors, and videos from experts in those areas sharing tips and guides to get you where you want to be.
Accelerate the process by accessing those tools and learning from experts who have already done it!
Don’t waste time trying to figure it out on your own when you can take advice from an expert in that field!
15. Practice Visualization Around Things You Want to Accomplish
This is another mindset exercise where you visualize yourself already having the desire you want.
Every day when you wake up and before you go to sleep, visualize yourself already in the state of having what you want.
The more you do that, the easier it will be for you to truly become that person!
The desired state will be ingrained in your mind because you have imagined it so many times that it feels familiar and achievable!
16. Do Scripting
Another way to visualize is through scripting.
This is where you write everything in super detail as if you already have that dream life.
But remember, in both visualization and scripting, it is the feelings that matter.
How do you feel when you already have that desire? Do you think you would be anxious or doubtful?
No.
You would be at peace, a little excited, but more calm because you already have it.
As you script each detail, like a day in your life being or doing xyz, you feel and write the emotions you would experience in that moment!
17. Think About What Your Future Version Would Be Like Energetically
Lastly, this might seem like a repetition of what I explained already, but being in the right energy is very important to becoming your best self.
The fastest way to get what you want is to match the energy of the future version that already has it!
For example, what do you think would be the energetic state of someone who travels the world, meets new people, and builds connections?
Confident, free, sociable, courageous, right?
So let’s say this is your desire: to travel the world, meet new people, and make friends.
You cannot be in a state of fear, curled up in your room, scared to go out and talk to people.
You need to match the energy of the person who finds it easy to travel around the world, easy to approach people, and not worry about rejection.
Once you match that energy while taking aligned actions, you’ll find that you easily accomplish your desire!
