What is Health Anxiety

If you find yourself worrying about your health even at the smallest changes in your body, a fever, or a stomach pain leading you to google the symptoms immediately and feeling like something is wrong then you are probably struggling with Health anxiety. 

You may have met some people who even when they get sick, they don’t really worry much about it, their mood does not change and they keep on living their life like they did before. 

Which may not be the case for you, the moment you get to know about any health related issue as small as itching in your arms, you think something is wrong in your body. 

The idea of being unwell and having a condition somewhere deep down scares you. You feel anxious and cannot stop obsessing over it.

Even after getting medical reassurance you may feel better for a while but it does not last very long and you end up feeling uneasy.

In the recent netflix show – FOUR SEASON, one of the characters – jack seemed to have the similar issue – as soon as he stepped foot in the lake during his vacation, the next day he kept assuming that he has Giardia, a condition you get in contaminated water.

According to Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADDA) Health anxiety are of two types, Somatic Symptom Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder, also known as hypochondriasis.  

Individuals with such health anxiety are unable to function or enjoy their life as they get caught up in their fears and anxiety. 

Anxiety acts as a protective response, and checking our bodies for any signs of illness can feel like a sensible way to keep ourselves safe. However, the more we focus on something, the more likely we are to become aware of it.

The reasons why certain people experience health anxiety can vary from a childhood experience of losing someone , being surrounded by someone with the same issue ( father or mother), and so on. 

Struggling with health anxiety can honestly be extremely challenging, it torments your mental health because the issue is far more serious in your mind then it actually is. 

You are constantly living in fear of something that is very unlikely to happen.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, also called CBT,, Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) , are some ways to treat it using professional guidance .

Along with these medical solutions, one thing that can support your journey in healing health anxiety is affirmations.

When you experience health anxiety it starts in the form of – thoughts, the inner voices or statements in your head that talks about the issue as something deeper or serious, deep down it’s the fear of illness. 

Affirming positive statements in the moment can help you reassure yourself that you are okay and this is just your mind trying to protect you 

Self-affirmations support you in staying focused on positive outcomes and help you adjust to new situations mentally and physically through the repeated use of uplifting statements.

A 2023 study done on patients who underwent  open-heart surgery found that those who listened to audio  affirmations experienced reduced anxiety and perceived less discomfort compared to those who didn’t.

Affirmations, after all, are thoughts or statements we tell ourselves every day. Even when you’re struggling with health anxiety, it often stems from the thoughts or affirmations you keep repeating like “I am not well” or “Something is wrong”, which lead to anxiety and worry.

So when you start rewiring your brain consciously and start affirming positive statements, you are able to feel calmer and reduce your anxiety.

While affirmations can complement your healing, they don’t replace core treatments like CBT or MCT. Still, they can help you feel calmer. By repeating these affirmations multiple times a day or whenever you find yourself feeling anxious or overthinking, you can switch your mind to affirmations to feel calmer and support your journey in overcoming health anxiety.

You don’t have to follow only these affirmations. You are free to affirm any statements that give you peace and feel natural to your language or thinking style.
