It’s natural to start spending more time indoors as the days get shorter. Aligning your routine with the season can help you feel better both inside and out.
The earlier sunset is the perfect cue to dim the lights, prepare for bed, and get a better night’s sleep as you embrace the autumn season.

1. Dim the lights after sunset
Sleep is a crucial part of our health, and people are only recently becoming aware of how bright lights can impact our melatonin and cortisol hormones.
If you often struggle to sleep at night, check if you’re still using bright, white lights in your home right up until you go to bed.
These lights can mimic daylight, which keeps your cortisol levels high and your melatonin levels low.
Dimming your lights helps create a warm and cozy environment that encourages your body to prepare for sleep.
2. Get into comfortable, loose, and warm pajamas
Feeling comfortable is a key step in winding down for the day. You don’t feel fully relaxed until you’ve put on a pair of comfy pajamas, whether they’re cute or not.
Of course, buying a cute and cozy set can make you feel good, but comfort is the top priority – even if that means wearing your most loved, old T-shirt.
3. Have an early, fall-focused dinner
The ideal time for dinner is between 5 and 7 p.m., or 8 p.m. at the latest. This helps your body digest your meals better and more quickly.

6. Remove your makeup and do your skincare routine
If you wore any makeup, it’s very important to double cleanse your face, even if you only put on sunscreen.
Follow with a calming face wash to truly clean your face at night.
You can put on a soothing face mask while you do other activities like watching a show, reading, or journaling.
Then, finish your nightly skincare routine with your other products, like serum and moisturizer.
7. Have a herbal tea or hot chocolate

Some people prefer drinking hot chocolate at night, while others find herbal tea more soothing.
Honestly, anything that makes you feel good is a great choice. But if you want to optimize your health, try opting for a herbal tea on most nights.
Teas like spearmint or chamomile can help with better sleep. Then, for a few days when you’re craving something different, hot chocolate can be your little treat!
8. Journal or meditate for a few minutes
A fall night routine is incomplete without spending a few minutes being mindful and intentional. Some of the quickest and easiest ways to find a few moments of calm before bed are to journal or meditate.
