I have been journaling for many years, and one of the reasons why I even started to journal was

because I was at a low point in my life, I struggled with many things that affected my mental health

How to Start a Journal for mental health. Why Keep a Journal?

There is not much you need to start a journal for mental health. Honestly, the main reason behind journaling is to share your thoughts and feelings.

Sharing helps you feel lighter and better and as you write, you understand yourself more, which builds a deeper connection with your own self.

It is just like talking to a friend with whom you open up and make a stronger connection!

You will feel better after venting to them and as they quietly listen to it. Journaling is just like that.

Not only that, you get clarity on whatever you are feeling troubled about, which helps you make better life decisions!

All you need to journal for mental health is

  • An empty notebook
  •  A pen
  •  A quiet space to think and write

What to Write in a Journal for Mental Health

There are many ways to journal for mental health. The idea of journaling is to vent out and get in touch with yourself.

So you can take the notebook and start writing your feelings, and your thoughts and go with the flow with whatever you feel and think, like you would talk to a friend.

You can be completely honest, and write what is troubling you, as nobody else is going to read it except you.

After this, you may feel lighter and better. Most of all, you might even end up understanding what is troubling you and what you can do about it!

  5. If you could achieve anything in your life, what would it be and why?
  6. Write a letter a about your biggest supporter
  7. List three things you’re grateful for today. Why are you grateful for these things?
  8. Write about a difficult time in your life and how you overcame it
  9. Write a letter to yourself, showing kindness and understanding, as you would to a friend facing similar challenges.
  10. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
  11. Describe a moment today when you were fully present and engaged. What were you doing, and how did it feel?
  12. What are three things that made you happy today?
  13. Describe a time in your life when you failed. What did you learn from it?
  14. What self-care activities did you engage in today? How did they make you feel?
  15. What are three of the biggest lessons you’ve learned from having (anxiety, depression, etc.)?
